About the Designer
Carl Edward Matthes was the son of a cabinetmaker, & grew up helping his father in Aarhus, Denmark. He trained as an upholsterer & became a small furniture producer in the 1950’s. From this point on, Matthes then focussed his work on developing his own designs, & produced his most well known '33 chair'. The chair was a huge success and was selected for the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels.
