Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen:
Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen designed numerous pieces of furniture individually, however, it is the pieces created by their collaboration that remain the most desired today. They established their joint studio, Hvidt & Mølgaard, in 1942 and designed over 250 pieces of furniture as well as taking on numerous architectural commissions. They were revolutionary in their use of laminated plywood, employing the medium to create furniture that was easily mass-produced and transportable whilst remaining beautifully crafted and distinctive in its appearance. Their Ax chair is still considered an ‘outstanding example of Danish innovation’ and is represented in museum collections the world over including the V&A and the Design Museum, Denmark. The pair worked with the most prestigious manufacturers of the period such as Herman Miller, Fritz Hansen and France & Daverkosen.
