Poul M. Volther

Poul M. Volther was one of the key proponents of Danish Modern. His designs and beliefs align closely with the styles and guiding tenets of the movement. His designs demonstrate his desire for functionality with their sound engineering and practical consideration for how people will likely use the furniture. The style of each piece has a timelessness which betrays Volther's desire to concentrate less on fashion trends than lasting answers for daily needs. He worked for the FDB, a cooperative design manufacturer with socialist principles, which aimed to provide quality furniture for the people, and after Borge Mogensen left, Volther took over as director. This sewing table exemplifies the winning combination of clever design and pleasing aesthetics that characterise Volther's most famous design, the Corona Chair of 1961.
