Hans Wegner:

Hans Wegner’s prolific output has earned him many titles, ‘King of Chairs’ being perhaps the most evocative. Coined by Copenhagen’s Designmuseum for their recent celebratory exhibition, it conveys Wegner’s staggeringly successful chair designs: he designed over 500 models, of which over 100 were put into mass production. Wegner was interested in refining designs of the past rather than creating something radically new; he studied furniture from previous ages and cultures and evolved beyond it. In this he created pieces that felt organic and comfortable and were easy for people to accommodate and acclimatise to. His designs have none of the rigidity of some modernist furniture; they aren’t dictates on living but aides to comfort. Christian Holmsted, curator of the aforementioned exhibition at Designmuseum, Danmark, believes that Wegner is ‘the most important Danish designer ever’. Tellingly, his designs are internationally recognised as icons and therefore can be found in the collections of the V&A, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
